THE NEGATIVE FACE OF ADOLESCENT OBESITY
Adolescent obesity is associated with a higher chance of premature death and disability in adulthood. But in addition to increased future risks, obese children experience breathing difficulties, increased risk of fractures, hypertension, early markers of cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance and psychological effects.
According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) adolescent obesity is also associated with increased risk of emotional problems. Teens with weight problems tend to have much lower self-esteem and be less popular with their peers. Depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder can also occur.
